About Bank of Uganda

Bank of Uganda is the central bank of Uganda and the country's primary monetary authority. Established in 1966, it is responsible for maintaining price stability, financial system stability, currency issuance, banking supervision, foreign reserve management, and monetary policy implementation. The Bank of Uganda operates under the Bank of Uganda Act and serves as the regulator of Uganda’s banking and financial services sector.

The institution plays a central role in Uganda’s economy by overseeing commercial banks, credit institutions, microfinance deposit-taking institutions, payment service providers, foreign exchange operations, and other regulated financial entities. It also serves as the banker to the Government of Uganda and manages the country's foreign exchange reserves.

SERVICES

  • Monetary Policy Management: The Bank of Uganda formulates and implements monetary policy aimed at maintaining low and stable inflation while supporting sustainable economic growth.
  • Currency Issuance: BoU is the sole issuer of Uganda’s national currency, the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). It manages currency design, printing, circulation, and withdrawal of damaged notes and coins.
  • Banking Sector Supervision: The central bank licenses, regulates, and supervises commercial banks, credit institutions, and other regulated financial institutions operating in Uganda.
  • Financial Stability Oversight: Monitors risks within the financial system and implements measures to maintain stability and public confidence in the banking sector.
  • Foreign Exchange Reserve Management: Manages Uganda’s international reserves and supports foreign exchange market stability.
  • Government Banking Services: Acts as banker, fiscal agent, and financial advisor to the Government of Uganda.
  • National Payment Systems Oversight: Regulates and oversees payment systems, electronic money operators, payment service providers, and financial market infrastructure.
